The work place of today is a much different as compared to past decade. VUCA world is not new to our work life. Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous ( VUCA) nature of work is all the time showing up in one form or other. There are several challenges in managing VUCA nature of work. As much as some of us may like,challenges of VUCA cannot be done away and therefore it needs to be managed well. There are several approaches to manage VUCA challenges and each of the tools and processes have significant benefits.Applied Improv is one such tool and we decided to explore it to get some insights into dealing with VUCA. Applied Improv is based on the principles of improv comedy and has four main tenets.PLAYPresent: Be in the present. A lot of times , one is either analyzing the past or anticipating the future. Being mindful of the present will definitely make you more aware of the surrounding and evolving situation.Let Go: Be ready to let go. You may be right most of the time,but sometimes just Let Go. We take positions on various issues and once a position is taken one finds it difficult to change that stand. Letting Go is all about realignment to group wisdom, for achieving the group objective.Adapt: The emerging situation can change rapidly and may not be predictable, Be quick and agile in physical and mental faculties to adapt to these emerging situations. At times there are things/issues/ situations beyond your control and all you can do is Adapt.Yes And .....: Yes and ... is a framework of response. All it means is "I hear you, I acknowledge your presence" "I hear you and understand what you say" The And follows the Yes which means I want to further indulge in conversations with you. And... I want to explore the possibilities/ ideas/analysis suggested by you.It was a matter of pride and honor for Shalaka Gundi and Me to conduct a session at the 5th IAF (International Association of Facilitators ) National Conference. The entire session was completely facilitative and the participants had great insights into the tools and processes used.The group learning was amazing and we managed to leave the participants with some simple yet very powerful insights. All one needs to do now is to implement the learning in their work life. Understanding and implementing these tenets can bring about magic in your work life, especially in the VUCA context.Happy PLAYing......
