My Mother, aged 83, manages the monthly accounting of the
Dhobi, Paperwallah, milkman,
kiranawallah, through a simple technology of diary writing. And she never goes wrong !She manages the
Bai’s salary and leave administration without HRMS software, no leave card, no biometric ! She uses 4 ancient and time tested technological tools:-Ø
Her modulating voice to cajole or reprimand or instruct, depending on the need of the situationØ
Situational Leadership to mentor the bai as requiredØ
Close monitoring, supervision and instant feedback mechanism to trouble shoot and resolve the issueØ
Love care and concern when the bai needs one!In the event, any of these resources threaten to quit, her risk taking ability springs to the fore; she activates her intellectual discretion – either to accept the threat and counter the challenge or counsel and dissuade them and help them see the larger gains in continuing to be her employee / vendor!Should this however, still result in an attrition, her capability to source and hire replacements in a cycle time of 24 hour leaves me gasping. Her networking skills to find equally good substitutes, acceptable to everybody in the family, leaves me questioning the need for recruitment agencies, reference checks, and emails !Her ability to use gizmos is zilch; but she delivers on OTIF / DIFOT every day, unfailingly – and can beat any six sigma doctrine! She hasn’t heard of ERP and doesn’t need an excel sheet or a calculator. She can get the Tata Sky guy home to resolve network issues; She calls in the pest control guy just when it is required. She knows when the Annual Maintenance contract for AC is due; She negotiates! Her Head count is Lean. She works on her own. She knows when to delegate it to other family members. She has KPIs – unwritten and self-inflicted; she monitors it herself; And she doesn’t use a Global software system. This Technology carries no Rewards or Recognition. A Leisure chat, conversation and being together in the family is her biggest reward.
A tribute to all Indian Mothers who do this right the first time, every time! Visit my blog site:
