I hope you all must have heard this evergreen & universally accepted quote, i.e. "Jack of all & Master of one", This is applicable to almost all professions. However, seeing current training trends, we all must now adapt a new philosophy i.e. "Jack of all, Master of 3"Strange, isn't it? Let me tell you, why do I say this? Its been more than 7 years in the field of training. I have gone through lot of ups & downs, thick & thin to learn some beautiful lessons to flourish in this field.Initially, I used to take up every other assignments which was related to Soft Skills. This went on for like 4 years, money was flowing in, I was getting lot of platforms and most importantly a recognition. Things were going well until the 'perspective shaking day' arrived.Perspective Changed: I was talking to a stalwart of HR fraternity, he asked me, 'so Sumit, which topics you are expert in? accordingly, we can discuss empanelment'. I said proudly, 'sir, I have been in this field for 4+ years & can train on any topic. You just tell me the topic & I will deliver it.'He then replied, which I think all the trainers should reflect on,"Sumit, its good to know that. But, tell me 3 topics, on which you have conducted more than 25+ times in your career?"I was speechless. I reflected on my career & realized that though I had conducted more than 200+ training/programs/ workshops, but did not have any specialty as such. That day, my perspective changed towards my training career.I sat in peace, made my own SWOT and shortlisted 3 top skills, which I enjoy training most. Those are Presentation Skills, Business Coaching and Leadership Development (recently I got my Coaching Certification). Now I read, conduct/train only on these topics. (exception is only with my old clients, where I am on their panel for other skills. Sooner or later, that work will also be zeroed down)WHY 3: There is such reason. But keeping in mind, the scope, training industry, commercial aspects and exposure, I feel 3 skills would be more than sufficient.Benefits: 1. You get Focused 2. Energy & Money, get channelized at one point 3. You can charge premium (since you are a specialist) 4. You can choose Workshops, Reading, Certifications with better focus.Flaws: 1. Actually these are not flaws, but reminders. 1. Have PATIENCE. (As the process of becoming specialization is bit lengthy than we think) 2. Commercial & Work: You may get less work in the beginning as you say no to other generic training assignments. This may bring commercial burden on you. But mark my words, this burden is worth in all aspects.FUTURE:Super-specialization will certainly take more time but returns are more that we imagine,So let's re-frame our mind to : 'Jack of all, Master of 3'Please share your thoughts in comments.
