About 17 years ago, I was doing very well in my career. I was working with one of the best hotel chains in the world, identified as a High Potential Performer and assigned to the company’s High Pot fast track programme. I was dreaming of a fantastic career, when illness struck. I had to come back to India to undergo a bone graft surgery on my back, spent a month in bed and another 2 months confined to my home. From working 12 to 14 hours daily, double shifts on holidays to being confined to 4 walls for months together was a nightmare. While I had a strong support system of family and friends, it was still a period of darkness, despair and fear. To top it all, I had to resign my job and seek opportunities in India. Having spent 14 years doing the one thing I loved and not knowing what other work I could take up, knocked me further down. At this really low point in my life, I happened to read Dr. Spencer Johnson’s ‘Who moved my cheese’. It gave me a whole new perspective. I was able to see my situation for what it was and look at what I needed to do. I was able to take up a different role in Learning and Development and today it has become my purpose and passion.
