Yes, you read the title right.
It’s not enough. You are talented. You have the passion. You have been putting in all the hard work. You do all your homework. Still I say, It’s not enough.Let me elaborate. However, before I explain, a few words to explain my take on this.First of all, let me apologise in advance to anyone who might find what I am saying here, a bit harsh, slap on the face, offensive. The intention is very clear. Not to hurt anyone and still, if possible, wake up people from slumber of false self-assurance. Sugar coating would not serve the purpose and hence I opt to write more direct.
The pretext:Training is a noble thing to do. Be it the conventional school teaching or the more contemporary corporate training or life coaching. The basic role is still the same. Imparting knowledge to the seeker. This is simplifying it for purpose of having everyone under same roof.
What is required:There can be a very exhausting list of what is required. Still let’s summarise a few here.
- Subject knowledge
- Experience with subject
- Experience with public speaking
- Passion, enthusiasm or simply mad motivation
- Dedication and follow up
… and the list goes on. I am sure many of you who are reading this have far more valuable things to add to this list than what I could conjure. We are in an era of Knowledge. Information is abundantly available. There are umpteen number of books, self-help courses, audio tracks, YouTube videos and DIY solutions for every practical aspect of training, coaching and what have you.Still not everyone turns out to be celebrity like Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, Zig Ziglar, Wayne Dyer, Jack Canfield, Robert Kiyosaki, Louise Hay, Suze Orman ,Deepak Chopra … and the likes. We have our own desi band comprising the likes of Shiv Khera, Chetan Bhagat, Simerjeet Singh, Sandeep Maheshwari and so on.My question is, if you can, please show me one person who read the book “How to be a Millionaire” and became a millionaire. I haven’t found any, yet.Since 2001, I have had honour and privilege to work with some of the finest therapists, healers, speakers, thinkers from around the world. Some very popular and many not so popular. Many of them not so popular were so much powerful in their training, in their content and their depth of knowledge was immense. Yet they were just another face in the crowd.Let me explain you with an everyday common life example. We all have (or had) that one friend who could sing. They were always in demand in college canteens, picnics, gatherings … just about anywhere. They could belch out wonderful renditions of popular music and yet none of them was ever famous. Have you wondered why? Before you answer, remember that they too were equally passionate about singing and would have given their heart and soul to be able to sing for masses and become famous one day. Still they are nowhere.I saw this in the world of trainers, coaches, speakers and healers too. They are talented, they are original, they have content and yet they are struggling to make an impact.
- I respect your passion to make a change in people’s life.
- I respect your dedication and hard work towards realising your goal.
- I respect your ground work and preparations that you put in to gather material for training.
- I respect your commitment irrespective of the failures.
Yet I wonder, why oh why, you should live a miserable life like this. When I started looking for these answers, I realised one thing. Just like, I am aspiring to be a successful trainer, coach, consultant. Successful is the key word.
Successful = Fortune, Fame, Financial Freedom achieved satisfactorily. What I saw as a problem:This is going to be a hard hitter. Lack of presentability (terrible packaging)
- Horrifying public speaking skills
- Haphazard flow of information
- Clumsy at the best when presenting
- Too much focus on norms set by others. Not original enough
- Too scared to be bold and outstanding
Once again, the list can go in finer details and that will be for another time, another article.
What is needed:One needs the likes of a finishing school for trainers. That is putting it very simply. What you need is proper image consulting, dressing, presentation skills, use of the knowledge you already have to deliver you better. Here are some examples that might help me explain what I am talking about.First of all, remember you can’t do it all. You need a team of professionals. People who are good at things they do. You might be good in your subject matter, however you writing skills are something you might not be proud of. Maybe you have everything working in your head but it all falls apart when you stand up to speak. The colour and clothing you use does not match the mood and the energy of what you are talking.Making a YouTube video using your mobile phone is great but it does not get any mileage you need. You are destroying your image before it is created. Your website is poorly organised. Your book definitely needs proof reading and an editorial grill. The glasses you are wearing? They are outright outlandish. Look at your finger nails (for that matter toe nails), look at your hair style …In short everything is pathetic.
The Solution:A management service that help you in packaging your service/product. Presentability counts. When all the trainers decide to break the current set of failed norms, they can establish a new high for the service they are providing. For your own sake, for sake of your own success, get yourself groomed. Make video that does not look like a 14-year-old doing a home work project on power point. There are so many points that I could cover but then it would be unfair in my first article. So, as promised, here is my first article. More will follow. Keep watching this space. Comments and questions are welcome. I will try and respond as quickly as possible. My name is Hemant Desai and I am in process of setting up something called “Hemant Desai Presents”Will keep you informed.
