Concerns about physical beauty or our personal appearance is quite normal and understandable. Because, our stereotypical irrational belief is that what is beautiful is good, and we assume that physically attractive people are superior to others and have many positive qualities. Findings across a number of studies have also revealed that physical attractiveness is likely to affect our beliefs and how we interact socially. We are more than happy and willing to help attractive people we meet or interact with. Research in personnel and organisational psychology have shown that physical attractiveness has major impact on recruiting and career success too. But is attractiveness mere beauty of the body and its external features?Haven’t we all, at some point in time, come across people with less attractive physical attributes; but are still very impressed by these individuals? They have an attractive charm about themselves, a pleasant personality, a charisma of their own. Such individuals smile more often, display politeness, are gratifying with likable skills and qualities, have good manners and a positive attitude. Here is another kind of attractiveness. The kind that is authentic. These individuals take care of themselves, conduct themselves well, always come across as neat and tidy in appearance and have a positive aura around them.Generally speaking, people tend to associate both physical attractiveness and poised characteristics with beauty and grace. This seems to look like an unfair factor in human interactions. Whether we believe it or not, People do judge a book by its cover. But it is also true that a beautiful cover prompts the reader for a closer analysis. Therefore, beauty in people may not merely be the body and its physical attributes. It also includes whatever one views visually; the external beauty as well as our attitude and overall personality we showcase. We
all have the ability to be beautiful by tuning our minds to see things differently and valuing what we are blessed with. Believing in yourself and developing your personality, to bring out your true beauty is a catalyst to a beautiful ‘You’. Sandra Barros is an Image Management Consultant and Soft Skills Trainer.
