Since childhood this quote has been very close to my heart. My parents always taught me to be human, kind and considerate. Now being an Image consultant, gives me the added opportunity to servepeople in enhancing their lives, and promote welfare in society. In context to the quote,” BE HUMAN SERVE MANKIND,”I would like to share two instances to illustrate the basis of how consideration and compassion are key to success and a better world. Take the instance of a ten year-old boy in rural USA from the time when an ice cream sundae cost much less. One morning he entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.“How much is an ice cream sundae?” he asked.“Fifty cents,” replied the waitress. The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it.“Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?” he inquired.By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient.“Thirty-five cents,” she brusquely replied. The little boy again counted his coins.“I’ll have the plain ice cream,” he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies. You see, he couldn’t have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip. Here the little boy was kind and considerate enough to have thought about the waitress. It is important in life to nurture virtue. When we give generously, we make room to receive. However, there is another virtue one needs to develop to accomplish life’s goals. That virtue is taking personal responsibility in the face of obstacles. Read on…In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the King’s’ wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed theKing for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move thestone to the side of the road. After much pushingand straining, he finally succeeded. After thepeasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticeda purse lying in the road where the boulder hadbeen. The purse contained many gold coins and a notefrom the King indicating that the gold was for theperson who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand!Every obstacle presents an opportunity to grow, or gain. The stone in the story signifies the obstacles we face on a daily basis. We need to take personal responsibility to figure what is keeping us from succeeding and make all attempts to overcome them. You can take a horse to the water. But to quench its thirst, the horse has to drink the water. Without the effort, there will be no gain. The same applies to all of us.You will remain the best as long as you are service-minded;promote good and welfare of society. The fundamental qualities we must all acquire to serve mankind are: develop a passion and love for humanity, kindness toward all,a charitable disposition, humility, honesty, and a thirst for knowledge- a desire to share knowledge with others and a constant desire to” BE HUMAN AND SERVE MANKIND.”Manisha Jain - Founder, Director and Lead Image Consultant at Sea Changes.www.seachanges.inChange begins at the grassroots level!+91 9833668935
