Vijayadashami as per Devanagari script is a combination of two words "Vijaya" (victory) and "Dashami" (tenth), connoting the festival on the tenth day celebrating the victory of good over evil. As per the mythology, there are two legends associated with it and celebrated accordingly in various parts of the country:
- Marks the end of Durga Puja, in honour of Goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura to restore and protect dharma.
- Marks the end of "Ramlila"and portrays Lord Rama's victory over the ten-headed evil king Ravana by burning his effigies and preparation of Diwali celebration.
In both the instances the main underlying theme is the commemoration of the triumph of good over evil and for new beginnings by conquering all ill (habits). Hence Vijayadashami is also a time for self-introspection to identify our own vices and take steps to conquer them.We must have tried many times to get rid of any addiction which we may have or remove any negative thing from us but we were not successful in it. Why? Because we want instant results, we start something today and we want the results tomorrow. It’s actually not possible this way. Anything ill that we wish to get removed from us, is actually a process. I recommend below five steps process to conquer ill habits.
- Identify the ill habit that you want to get rid of. For example, smoking.
- Identify the triggers that causes you to do that ill habit. For example, triggers for smoking could be meeting friends, going to a tea stall, etc.
- Replace your ill habit with a good habit. For example, when you feel like smoking, then start doing breathing exercise. Also avoid the triggers of ill habits.
- Surround yourself with people who live the way you want to live.
- Visualise yourself succeeding.
This five steps process, if done consistently over a period of time, will surely help you in conquering any ill habit.Have a great Vijayadashami and I wish you the best in conquering your ill habits.@AnkitIttanImage Credit: Google search, edited by Ankit Ittan
